ABOUT THE HOUSE

TIGLIETUZZO

The ancestral name of the house is Tiglietuzzo – small lime tree. It used to belong, as many other farm houses in the immediate area, to the Guicciardini family since the mid 19th century. Before the Gucciardini, the land and its farmhouses belonged to the Pucci family but records dating from the early 14th century show that Tiglietuzzo was part of the large domain of the Cavalcanti family.  It is also said to have been a stop over for pilgrims coming and going from the Vallombrosa monastery.

Our property extends over 40 hectares (c. 100 acres) of which 8 hectares are agricultural land and the rest woodland.

There are 700 olives trees, about 100 fruit trees, one walnut grove and several vegetable gardens according to season.

There are also two artesian wells, which provide water for the land and for the house.

Down at the bottom of the hill, within the woodland runs a stream. In the summer it is mostly dry but from the autumn its gentle burbling can be heard at the top of the hill.

The woodland around the house is very wild and often impenetrable with high overhanging cliffs. The vegetation comprises mainly medditerrenean oaks, elms, chestnut trees, holm oaks, poplars to name but a few.

The woodland is full of wild life and in the autumn many varieties of edible mushrooms can be found.

There are also wild boars, deer, foxes, hares, porcupines, beech martens and forest dormouse as well as a large variety of birds to be seen in the day and to be heard at night.

There are some beautiful walks in the immediate surrounding ranging from 30 minutes to 2.30 hours of various levels. There are also some amazing walks and excusions in the National Park of Valombrosa which is about 10km away.

The unspoiled regions of Casentino and Pratomagno are within 30 minutes by car. There you can also visit some very authentic villages, churches and castles and monasteries  such as Poppi, Stia, Loro Ciuffera, Bibbiena, La Verna and La Pieve di Romena amongst many others hidden and picturesque sites.

Of course major centres of historical and cultural interest are also very near.
